Lore Brewing Beer and BBQ? a serious Danville, KY foodie event

DANVILLE, KY – Lore Brewing Company and the folks at the Kentucky State BBQ Festival are teaming up to bring you some of the best beer in the Bluegrass to enjoy while experiencing world-class BBQ. Four selections will be available from Lore at the event, which takes place in Constitution Square on the first weekend in November. One thing you should know when attending a “foodie” type event is how to properly pair your food and drink.

When most people think of food pairings, they think of wine. What you might not know is that properly pairing beer is just as important. We’ve done the work for you, and written a guide on how to take your taste buds to BBQ heaven with a little help from Lore Brewing’s beer.

Toolbox Cream Ale – Since this is …..a lighter and slightly sweet beer, you don’t want to overpower the beer with really heavy flavors. This beer will go best with any meat that has a fruity glaze or is lightly smoked. This includes chicken, sausages and most pulled pork sandwiches that aren’t swimming in sauce. We experienced this pairing first hand at Danville’s Oktoberfest, where the pulled pork from the Lucky Dog BBQ Team and Toolbox Cream Ale complimented each other very well.

Freya’s Stone Amber Ale – This beer is right in the sweet spot for just about every type of BBQ. The hop flavor will play nicely with most sauces, and the caramel maltiness won’t be drowned out by more heavily smoked fare. Freya’s Stone is highly recommended for things like ribs, sauced sandwiches, and brisket. This is by far the most popular beer in Lore’s lineup, so make sure you pick some up before it runs out.

Derby Brown Ale – With the dark and roasty flavors in this beer, you will generally want to seek out food with heavier flavors. Anything with a sticky, molasses type glaze, and any type of beef pairs very well with this beer. Stay away from chicken while sipping this one, because the lighter taste will be completely overpowered by the beer. Food that is heavily smoked will also go well with Derby Brown.

Smoked Festive Ale – This beer from Lore was created exclusively for the festival. It is a smoky-looking light ale made with malted barley that has been smoked over cherrywood. The result is a hammy smoke flavor in the beer. Some people have referred to it as “bacon beer”. Enjoy this one with anything at the festival. Smoked beer goes well with smoked meat – but we probably didn’t have to tell you that. It is not a part of Lore’s regular production, so make sure that you try this beer that will only be available at the festival.

The above guidelines will give you the best possible flavor combinations. What really matters is that you enjoy the festival. Any of these beer options will be great as long as they are consumed responsibly. Enjoy your food and drink, and experience all that this event and the city of Danville has to offer. When you get back to wherever it is you call home, remember to seek out and support local breweries!

Centre College President John Roush and his wife, Susie Miller Roush, hosted a barbecue Wednesday for Centre’s Sodexo food services staff, whom they agreed deserved a night off before students begin arriving today.

Lucky Dog donated the catered event for about 150 people as an fundraising auction item at the Court Appointed Special Advocates at Woodlawn’s Derby Eve Gala in May.

The Roushes attended the CASA event, where Susie Roush said she went straight for Lucky Dog’s donation.
“When I saw it as an auction item, I thought ‘oh boy, it is so good,’” she said.

The couple won the catering event and decided to host a meal for the Sodexo staff, giving them an evening of the good food and great service they provide for others every day, John Roush said.

CASA at Woodlawn Director Laura Guerrant attended the event and said she was delighted to experience the Roushes generous idea for the barbecue.

“It’s like the gift that keeps on giving and giving and giving,” she said.

The 9th Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party takes place in Madison Square Park June 11-12, 2011, from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM.  The weekend-long event occurs every June and brings together the country’s top pitmasters who cook up their award-winning food for over a 100,000 barbecue enthusiasts. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Madison Square Park, the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party attracts people from near and far to sustain and celebrate America’s authentic culinary and musical traditions.

I can’t tell you how many wonderful compliments we received on the food, people raved on and on about how good it was. We are so happy that we chose you to do the food for the wedding, and we were blown away by your setup and how hard you guys worked all day, we appreciate it all more than we can say. And the leftovers!! I never in my wildest dreams imagined there would be SO much food leftover, we have shared it with many people and they all have nothing but praises for how wonderful it is. Many, many thanks for making this day even more special to us, you and Cindy and truly a treasure and we are grateful and so appreciative of your excellent service and food quality.

We were fortunate enough to do the Haney Rehearsal AND Wedding reception at Talon.  Thank you to Rayna from AlwaysPlanned.com and her bride for believing in us to provide a different taste for each day.  It went off without a hitch – and all we got was compliments from the food!  They loved it!!!

we had the pleasure of cooking for Reverend Jim Stewart’s son and very near future daughter in law’s Wedding Rehearsal dinner here in Danville at his Presbyterian Church.  75 people and most of the people I spoke with were from out of town – namely Washington, DC and Kansas City, MO.  The DC people want us to open a restaurant near them and the KC, MO people loved the Q!  I overheard someone say, is this BBQ as good as Kansas City’s BBQ and the reply was not surprisingly, “this is good, but KC is known for its BBQ – they are a BBQ Capitol of the world”.  Now, I didn’t expect them to say mine was better, but I was delighted to even be in the same sentence as KC BBQ.

We served Smoked Chicken, Country Style Ribs and the show stopper, Texas-style Brisket.  Bratwurst for the kiddos and sides were my Wicked Smoked Beans, Lexington Cole Slaw, Kosher pickles and Dinner Rolls.

The best thing we were able to use their fully decked out, commercial kitchen.  Wow, what a pleasure that was.  We had a blast and wish the newlyweds all the Joy, Health and Happiness the world can dish out.
